In this exclusive interview, we have the privilege of sharing the inspiring story of William Yu, a resilient individual who faced a life-changing event during what should have been one of the best years of his life. William's life took a dramatic turn in 2018 when he was involved in a motorcycle accident on his way to work. This accident resulted in a traumatic brain injury that forever altered his world. During this sit down, William opens up to us about the impact his accident has had on various parts of his life and especially one of the most important elements for a young person - how he now navigates partying and nightlife.

A Life-Altering Accident

At the time of the accident, William's recollection of the two weeks leading up to the incident and his subsequent stay in the hospital was entirely wiped clean. He was diagnosed with a moderate to severe brain injury and suffered from post-traumatic amnesia (PTA), an experience he describes as waking up to a blank slate each day. Furthermore, William sustained a spinal injury (T7-10), dislocated collar bone and bruised liver. His memories from this period were replaced by a sense of restarting a video with every sunrise. Remarkably, he recalls even the most poignant moments, such as removing urinary and nasal tubes while struggling with his confused mental state.

The Impact on Education and Career

The accident disrupted William's educational journey. At the time, he was pursuing his Higher School Certificate (HSC) and had to put his plans on hold. He adapted by focusing on a TAFE course and later on a university course, determined to work in the health sector despite the formidable challenges he faced.

Coping with a Changed Personality

A notable change that emerged in William's life after the accident was a transformation in his personality. He became more extroverted, which he now sees as an aspect of his post-injury life that he has embraced.

Nightlife and Coping Mechanisms

William's post-accident journey included navigating the complexities of socialising and nightlife. He missed out on the typical night-time adventures during his final year of school. Although he managed to participate in 'schoolies,' his early attempts at drinking were unwise, as he was prone to blackouts. Furthermore, William noticed that he started getting hangovers more easily, requiring a full week of detox to recover from even a moderate night out.

In response to these challenges, he sought solace in cooking as an alternative to drinking. Alcohol had been a significant part of his life before the accident, and adjusting to this change was difficult.

It took William several years to fully accept his brain injury, and during that time, his parents initially attempted to keep it hidden. He also encountered obstacles when trying to enjoy nightlife; he wasn't allowed into nightclubs, leaving him to wonder if it was due to his Asian heritage. Canberra became his preferred nightlife spot, as he found it more accommodating than Sydney, where he often ran into less pleasant individuals.

Transformations and New Passions

William's post-accident journey led him to discover Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu while in Thailand, thanks to his passion for martial arts. He even had a close call in Thailand, getting hit by a motorbike after consuming a significant number of cheap shots. Miraculously, he walked away with no injuries.

A New Mission: Spreading Awareness about Brain Injury

William envisions spreading awareness about brain injuries by delivering talks at universities and hospitals. His aspiration is to inspire those affected by brain injuries while educating others about their impact.

The Challenge of Understanding

William's journey since his accident has not been without its challenges. People often don't fully understand his disability. Even colleagues can be shocked and unsure of how to react. He sometimes feels it's selfish to expect people to understand fully, but he's found that, generally, people have been quite supportive and understanding.

A Perspective on Alcohol and Advice to the Youth

The most significant change after William's injury was giving up alcohol. While he misses the social aspect of drinking, he's discovered that it has worked out for the better. He also thinks it's essential for young people to find their 'drug of choice' – whether it's a hobby, passion, or social activity that brings joy, instead of thinking they have to rely on alcohol.

Final Thoughts

William's journey since the accident has been one of resilience and transformation. The challenges have been immense, but he's discovered new passions, set new goals, and continued to find purpose and fulfilment in life. His story serves as an inspiration to others, showing that it is possible to persevere, adapt, and embrace change, no matter the circumstances.
